Healthy Vegan Lentil Hot Dogs

I love a good hot dog, but I didn’t like any of the vegan hot dogs I tried in the past, so I had to create one! I love this recipe because it’s:

  1. Healthier than any vegan store bought hot dog I’ve seen.

  2. Super quick and easy to make.

  3. Main ingredients is just lentils.

  4. It’s high in protein and great as a post workout meal!

Ingredients

  • Lentils

  • Vital wheat flour

  • Whole wheat flour

  • Soy sauce

  • Mustard

  • Olive oil

  • Garlic powder

  • Onion powder

  • Smoked paprika

Even though I used cooked red lentils for this recipe, any type of cooked lentils would work, just make sure you don’t over cook them and you drain them properly.

I haven’t tried this recipe with chickpeas instead of lentils yet, but I am guessing that should work too.

How to Make Lentil Hot Dogs?

You do need a food processor, a bowl and a saucepan.

  • Mix the lentils with the soy sauce and mustard in the food processor.

  • Pour this mix in a bowl, add the rest of the ingredients, mix/knead with your hands.

  • Form 12 medium hot dog “sausages”.

  • Bake them or sauté them.

  • Dairy-free (without butter)

  • Healthier than every vegan hot dog I’ve seen

  • High in protein

  • Easy to make

  • Amazing as lunch, dinner, snack, or as a post-workout meal

Best Lentil Hot Dogs!

This amazing vegan hot dog is the perfect healthy replacement for ultra processed vegan store bought hot dogs. It’s naturally protein-rich, nut free, eggless, easy to make, super tasty and only 85 calories per hot dog!

Ingredients (US Customary)

  • 2 1/2 cups cooked lentils (I used red lentils)
  • 1/4 cup vital wheat flour
  • 1/4 cup whole wheat
  • 4 tsp soy sauce
  • 2 tsp mustard
  • 5 tsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 3/4 tsp salt

Ingredients (Metric)

  • 188 grs cooked lentils (I used red lentils)
  • 30 grs vital wheat flour
  • 30 grs whole wheat
  • 4 tsp soy sauce
  • 2 tsp mustard
  • 5 tsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 3/4 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Add the lentils with the soy sauce and mustard to the food processor and run until smooth (almost like a thick hummus). You might need to scrape the edges of the food processor a few times for this.
  2. Pour this mix in a bowl, add the rest of the ingredients, mix/knead with your hands and form 12 medium hot dog “sausages”.
  3. Next: you can either bake them or sauté them. I tried it both ways and it works great!!
  4. If you bake them, bake at 370 F for 7 min., then flip them and give them another 5-7 minutes.
  5. If you sauté them, use a nonstick pan and add a bit of olive oil, you will need to flip them often to cook each side, it took me about 4-5 minutes. That’s it!

Notes

Lentils: I used cooked red lentils but any type of cooked lentils would work, just make sure you don't over cook them and drain them properly.

Gluten free? I haven't made a gluten free version yet. Vital wheat flour gives this recipe a great elasticity, so I'm still looking for a good replacement.
